6 Things Every Website Owner Needs To Know

Maintaining a Website Used to be Easy

In the good ol’ days, if you built your website correctly, you could pretty much leave it alone and you would be ok.

But as Google continues to tweak their algorithm, hackers continue to create mayhem, and technologies get smarter, you need to make sure your website stays up to speed. We’ve created 6 items that every website owner needs to know. Let us know if we can help you with any of these 6 items.

1. Do You Have A Backup?
Things happen. Whether there is a mistake by your web developer or hosting company, or your site gets hacked – Do you have a backup? What if your entire site crashed. The worst-case scenario is that you lose everything, including your SEO rankings. If you have a backup you can get it back up within a matter of minutes.

Many hosting providers have a backup system in place, or provide one for a small fee. Trust me, you need to double check to make sure you have a backup system in place.

2. Check Your Contact Forms
Do you have a contact form on your website? When is the last time you checked it yourself to make sure it works? How many leads are you losing if it is broken?

3. Update Passwords
Update your hosting password at least twice a year. If you have had many people working on your site, update it more frequently.

You need to have secure passwords that contain letters and symbols.  An example of a good password is “2JSiwel23&2#”.  If you are using “password” or “123456” you are extremely vulnerable to hackers.  Do not use one of the 25 most common passwords

4. Keep Software/Plugins Updated
Platforms such as WordPress often have updates available. Many of these updates have important security patches. It is very important that you have the most current versions of both your software and plugins.

5. Social Signals
Google is now looking at social signals to help them rank websites. Have you added the Facebook “like” and Google+ “share” to your site?

6. Listen to Your Analytics
Make sure you have Google Analytics installed and go through the reports from time to time. Not only do you want to pay attention to how many visitors you get, but you want to see how long they are staying and what pages they are going to. There is even a tool to see how users navigate your site! Use this information to make improvements to your website.
